MY MUSICAL MISSION:
To bring Stevie Wonder’s song “I can only be me” into the Real Book of Jazz – and help it become a New Jazz Standard played by musicians all over the world!
In 2019, world famous jazz pianist Chick Corea shared a thought on Facebook that has stayed with me deeply: Stevie Wonder wants his songs to become “New Standards.” I want to help to make that happen.
My musical mission is to bring Stevie Wonder’s nearly unknown musical treasure “I can only be me” into the Real Book of Jazz, so jazz musicians around the world can discover it, share it, interpret it, make it “their own“.
To me, this song is already a true jazz standard in waiting: musically inspiring, harmonically rich, and blessed with one-of-a-kind lyrics of extraordinary humanity. Words that could hardly be more important in these uncertain times, reminding us of the beauty and necessity of simply being ourselves.
Let’s give this song the place it deserves in the living tradition of Jazz and in the heritage of music …
